STEPHEN TOWNLEY BASSETT

RAD 100 – Esikolweni V

Original Available – Enquire to Purchase

This panel appealed to me because of its celebration of eland and the skilled way they have been shaded. Early travellers in South Africa spoke about the vast herds of eland they encountered when journeying into the hinterland from the coast. The antelope in the detail photograph below right is not an eland and more likely a hartebeest or a similar sized antelope. The figure behind this antelope is carrying what appears to be a bag in one hand and has a quiver on his back. Two figures in orange to the right of the antelope are in some type of exchange. It is likely that these images were painted at a later date and not by the artist who originally painted the eland frieze.
